The Bingo Story......

“Bingo” Brenna is a 2 ½ year old, intact male beagle that was the victim of vehicular trauma in early 2011.  The driver of the car that struck “Bingo” did not stop to check on him and drove away from the scene of the accident.  In addition to multiple fractures of his pelvis, “Bingo” also sustained sciatic denervation injury (loss of neurologic function of the sciatic nerve) to his Right hind limb due to avulsion (“pulling away”) injury to the nerve or it becoming severed during the formation of the fractures (“broken bones”).

The only option for “Bingo” was hind quarter amputation.  During the amputation surgery, Dr. Pooya found abdominal contents running down the length of the limb to be amputated, a clear indication of abdominal hernia formation.  A second, staged surgical procedure was performed to explore his abdomen and four separate abdominal, traumatic hernias were discovered and repaired by Dr. Pooya.

“Bingo” did amazingly well during both of his surgical procedures & peri-operative hospitalization at Greenbriar and after going home post-operatively.  “Bingo’s” owners are extremely happy with how well he is doing & getting around and thank Dr. Pooya and the Greenbriar Veterinary Hospital staff for “saving his life.”

Tracheal Stenting

Dogs with tracheal collapse can now be definitively treated with intraluminal tracheal stent placement at Greenbriar Veterinary Hospital. This new technique allows successful treatment of tracheal collapse without the need for high-risk surgery and/

or perioperative complications. No incision is made and dogs are markedly improved almost immediately. Two episodes of general anesthesia are required: one for measurement of the trachea and one for stent placement. The stent is fabricated for each patient based on their individual measurements.

"Prior to having the intra-luminal tracheal stent put in, Gucci was coughing all the time, having trouble sleeping, and at times struggling to get a breath.  He couldn’t exercise, and we had to take extreme measures to avoid any sources of heat, humidity, stress, excitement or exertion.  Since having the stent put in it’s been like we were given a puppy back- he is his old,

rambunctious self with very mild, intermittent coughing (his was put in just a few weeks ago) and has been able to romp like he hasn’t in years.  We are so happy with the success of this procedure that we want to recommend it to all owners of dogs with advanced tracheal collapse like our Gucci.  Thank you Dr. Pooya and the wonderful, caring staff at Greenbriar Veterinary Hospital for saving our Gucci and giving us our happy, energetic dog back!"

Meet Sugar Roland

This is a pre-operative image of the Left hemi-mandible (Left half of the jaw).  The malignant tumor (osteosarcoma) can be seen just inside the three pre-molar teeth.  It not only invaded local soft tissues but the subtending bone, as well.

These are 2-week post-operative images of Sugar.  She had been wearing a tape muzzle as Dr. Pooya performed a plastic/reconstructive procedure called cheiloplasty to change the shape of the lips on the Left side so that her tongue would not hang from the mouth excessively and to prevent excessive salivation.  As can be seen here, the cosmetic results at just 2 weeks post-op are amazing, with only a small fold at the front of her lips and mild protrusion of the tongue.  The pathology report came back as complete resection of tumor cells with wide margins.

She certainly seems to be grateful to Dr. Pooya for completely excising the cancer!
